Word was getting around about Stereophonics, after their debut album went gold in the UK, picking up a BRIT Award and playing to 50,000 at Swansea’s Morfa Stadium, all in the space of two years.

One of those paying close attention was Nick, from the former mining community of Ton Pentre in the Rhondda, just a few miles over the mountain from Cwmaman in the Cynon Valley, where the Stereophoncs began.

At the time Nick was a cabaret singer at 5 Star hotels, clubs and on cruise ships all over the world, but once he began performing the songs from Word Gets Around, it was clear that his future would lie in a Stereophonics tribute band, Monophonics.

Gigs at parties and weddings soon led to bigger and better bookings until the Monophonics found themselves headlining a Six Nations rugby event at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena in front of a crowd of 3,000.

A Channel 4 documentary followed, before the biggest gig of them all came along, playing live for a BBC Radio Wales outside broadcast, reaching 45,000 listeners.

16 years later and Nick’s now taken another leaf out of Kelly Jones’ book, and launched a solo career under the title of Monophonic. Making the Stereophonics sound even more accessible to venues up and down the country.
